ATTORNEYS
Kadian Townsend
Partner - New York
Kadian is Jamaican born and a New York native. She is the managing partner of Townsend & Bastien’s New York office and was named one of the Washington Bar Association’s Power 100 Young Lawyers. Kadian has extensive experience in corporate law, including handling complex contractual transactions, negotiations, and professional liability coverage disputes arising out of shareholder derivative suits, securities class actions, and SEC investigations. Kadian has drafted contracts for musicians for grammy-nominated artists and have advised and negotiated commercial deals within the music and entertainment industry, as well as real estate transactions. During her time at the David A. Clarke School of Law, Kadian served in the Tax Clinic where she represented low-income individuals facing IRS and District of Columbia tax controversies. She also served in the Civil Rights/Legislation Clinic where she advised non-profit organizations on employment discrimination issues and assisted in drafting proposed revisions to D.C. Human Rights Act. Kadian is passionate about building her community and youth empowerment, and is involved in various philanthropic endeavors, including her family’s non-profit organization, The Townsend Family Foundation. The Foundation provides assistance to underserved youth, both in the US and Jamaica, in gaining access to an education. She is also a member of the Education Committee for the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade for the Government of Jamaica, West Indies. She is a member of the Nassau County Bar, the New York State Bar, and the American Bar Association. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, playing tennis, and reading.
Gaëlle Bastien
Partner - Washington, D.C.
Gaëlle is a Maryland native and the managing partner of Townsend & Bastien's Washington, DC office. With expertise in real estate, corporate and business compliance, estate planning, immigration, and clemency, she brings a well-rounded legal perspective to the firm. A David A. Clarke School of Law graduate, she is passionate about advocating for clients across various legal areas. Before joining the firm, she worked for the federal government at The Office of the Pardon Attorney, where she assisted in drafting a favorable recommendation for Ricky Donnell Tyler, who was granted a pardon by President Biden on April 24, 2024. She also spent time at the District of Columbia Housing Authority, primarily involved in hearings and transactional work, gaining invaluable experience in public service and housing policy. She is a member of the D.C. Bar Association. Outside of her legal practice, Gaëlle has had a varied career, working as a paralegal before law school, as an au pair in the South of France, in retail, as a waitress for a catering company, and as a campaign intern for multiple local Maryland campaigns. In addition, she speaks Haitian Creole, French, and a little Spanish. She enjoys traveling, staying active through regular workouts, and exploring the world of art by attending museums and galleries. She unwinds by watching non-legal TV dramas when she's not immersed in her legal work or hobbies. She lives in the suburbs of Maryland with her family and two Labradoodles.
